Shops under flats
A pharmacy or a grocery on the ground floor may fall into a SIRA category with its own requirements, while the residential floors above it do not. They share an entrance and a riser and almost nothing else, and the two systems are kept separate for exactly that reason.
New buildings, cabling already closed
A building finished last year has its risers in and its ceilings closed. Adding to it is a matter of finding the route the builder left rather than the route you would have chosen, which the survey works out before anyone quotes.
Filling up as you install
Buildings here are often half occupied while work goes on. Noisy or disruptive work gets scheduled around residents, and the system is commissioned in stages rather than waiting for the building to be full.
Worth knowing
If there is a shop on the ground floor, tell us the activity on its trade licence. Whether SIRA applies to it changes the specification for that unit — and not for the flats above it.
